Is it possible to switch the driver's license I obtained in my country to a Japanese one?

It is possible, if you satisfy the requirements listed below. To switch, file the necessary documents at the Driver's License Testing Center or Higashi-mikawa Driver's License Center.
  1. After a driver's license was issued to a driver in a foreign country, he or she must have stayed in that country for more than three months in total.
  2. When an application is filed for switching to a Japanese license, the license obtained in the foreign country has not expired.
The required documents are as follows.
  1. Foreign driver's license and copies of both sides of license
  2. Japanese translation of the foreign driver's license (a Japanese translation of the foreign driver's license must be proviced by the government agency of the issuing country, the ambassy or consulate or in the the Japanese Automobile Federation (JAF) Aichi branch (at 052-872-3685) or its local office.
  3. Old/new passport and copies of the page with your facial photo on it and the page stamped with your status of residence and its expiration date
  4. Certificate of Alien Registration and a copy of both sides of the Certificate
  5. Photo taken within 6 months (3cm high X 2.4cm wide)
  6. Processing fees (vary depending on the type of renewal license)
After these documents are inspected, you have to take an aptitude test, a knowledge test on Japanese traffic safety laws and a driving skills test, in that order.

You can take the knowledge test on Japanese traffic safety laws in Japanese (with Hiragana characters printed beside Chinese characters), Portuguese, Spanish, English, Chinese, Korean, Persian etc. If you pass the driving skills test, a driver's license will be issued to you on the same day.
