A chahakobi ningyo (tea-serving doll) by Shobei Tamaya, the ninth-generation head of a mechanical doll craft originating in the Edo period (1603~1867) for the entertainment of guests. The modern tradition has been handed down ever since the seventh-generation Shobei Tamaya recreated his first doll in 1970 based on a set of drawings in the 1796 work Karakuri zui (Illustrations of Mechanical Dolls). Inside the wooden doll, which stands about 35 centimeters tall, are some 70 parts including cogwheels, cams, and springs. When a tea bowl is placed on the tray held in the hands, the doll moves forward to where the guest is seated. When the guest removes the bowl from the tray, the doll ceases to move and then turns about and returns to its place.
