"Poultry and Eggs are Safe to Eat"

January 27, 2011

The highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed at poultry farms in Aichi Prefecture.

However, avian influenza is known for its weakness to acid and becomes inactivated by acid in the stomach. It can also be easily killed by cooking poultry or eggs thoroughly. Therefore, it is known that there is no possibility for humans to catch avian influenza by eating poultry or eggs.

In addition, no case has been reported so far in the world that the avian influenza was transmitted to humans through properly cooked chicken or eggs.
